Kiva Dunes Re-Opens With New Putting Surfaces
Date: 9/9/2009
Kiva Dunes is re-open after a very successful putting surface grass replacement. When Kiva Dunes opened in 1995, Tifdwarf Bermuda grass was the best grass available for golf course putting surfaces. Over the past 14 years, many improvements have been made in turf grass technology. Currently, the “ultra-dwarf” category of Bermuda grass is considered to be the most superior on the market.
Kiva Dunes closed July 6th and over the next two weeks replaced the existing putting surfaces with Champion Bermuda grass. Mark Stillings General Manager at Kiva Dunes says “Champion is now considered the finest Bermuda putting surface grass available” Champion is an “ultra dwarf” Bermuda grass that closely mirrors the northern bent grass in both playability and appearance. The key feature is this grass can withstand the summer heat of the Gulf Coast that bent grass can not. The greens were sprigged (the process of placing small living pieces of plant down instead of seed) toward the end of July and they have been growing in since. “Although this grass was only planted 6 weeks ago on our course, the greens have grown-in beautifully and continue to improve on a daily basis as we move into the fall season.” adds Stillings The putting surfaces are smooth and slick. Since the greens were not reconstructed and just replanted, they are soft and very receptive to incoming shots.
To all the past customers of Kiva Dunes “We appreciate your loyalty over the past 14 years, and look forward to having you play throughout the fall season” says Stillings.
